What is Media Literacy 9?

What is Media Literacy 9 and why does my child need to take it?
Grade 9 at CHHS for the 2017-18 school year.  The core subjects will run all year, every other day instead of being semestered as they have been the last few years.  In order to meet the required outcomes from Alberta Education, all Grade 9's will need to take one more academic course.  Media Literacy will allow our Grade 9 teachers the opportunity to enrich, fill gaps and extend learning in literacy and numeracy. This course will also cover the importance of developing proficiency and fluency with specific tools of technology. Teachers will focus on how to process, analyze, and respond to the immense volume of media and information in our society.  Some key points of Media Literacy will be to:

  • Build intentional cross-cultural connections and relationships with others so to pose and solve problems collaboratively and strengthen independent thought
  • Design and share information for global communities to meet a variety of purposes;
  • Manage, analyze, and synthesize multiple streams of simultaneous information;
  • Create, critique, analyze, and evaluate multimedia texts;
  • Attend to the ethical responsibilities required by these complex environments.

If you have any questions or concern, please contact the teacher involved or Shonna Barth, Vice Principal for Grade 9.
