Productions receive critical acclaim for the acting, dancing and singing. This has been achieved by collaborating with the Band program under the direction of Curtis Perrin and Vocal partnerships with Vocal Directors Ralph Browne and June Reid as well with the Medicine Hat College Pianist Shauna Kohls Walters. There are about 4000 audience members who purchase tickets to see CHHS productions each year. Closer to 10,000 people see our students perform each year when we include the Rotary Music Festival, international trip performances and other public performances. Audiences can expect musicals to run for the first two weeks of February each year.

Theatre Arts is a unique program at CHHS with a focus is on staging major performances. Students become trained in all areas of production. Our students take the knowledge and experiences gained in our classes and succeed in University programs and professional settings. There is an extensive list of Theatre Arts graduates who are accepted into top university performance programs and technical theatre programs throughout North America each year who continue to work professionally.  I am very proud to share that CHHS graduates are often attend university on scholarships for Vocal, Acting, Dancing, Music and Musical Theatre. Our graduates are often cast as the leads in their university musicals, win major dancing awards at university, and have been the valedictorian for the Canadian School of Performing Arts!!

Every year, CHHS Theatre Arts Drama students travel the world to perform and attend workshops to international locations such as New York, London, Beijing, Shanghai, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Disneyland.
There are 26 full length plays for the Theatre Arts classes which I have directed. I have also directed 16 musicals at CHHS including
Something Rotten, We Will Rock You, Newsies, Bullets Over Broadway, Bonnie & Clyde, The Addams Family, All Shook Up, Young Frankenstein, Guys and Dolls, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, Happy Days, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Back To The 80’s, Disney’s High School Musical On Stage! and Annie. Disney's Lion King Jr. musical also had a record number of jr high students. All shows have been successful - playing to full houses for the run of the production. CHHS was awarded the first Canadian and the first High School contract in North America for the musical Happy Days. Get ready for our next musical The SpongeBob Musical which shall be formed in February!!!

I am very proud of our students who are currently Provincial Champions and Finalists at the Alberta Music Festival who have been a part of the CHHS Theatre Arts program.  There are an incredible number of titles won by our students over the last 10 years. This year we are honoured to have the 2021 Rotary Music Festival Rose Bowl Winner, Josie Hoffarth as a leading member of our Theatre Arts program and musical cast. CHHS is also the school which graduated the 2017 Canadian National Musical Theatre Finalist Hunter Semrau!!!   Almost every Provincial winner / finalist for Alberta has recently came from the CHHS musical theatre program in Medicine Hat. These are phenomenal accomplishments as these students competed against thousands of other elite performers to win their titles!!!!
My coaching experiences include being the Head Coach for Medicine Hat College Woman’s Fastball teams for many years as well as coach for the CHHS Boy’s Baseball team for 18 years.
