Intro into Academies

The Academies are enhanced opportunities for unique instruction for students in Gr. 7- 9. The purpose of our Academies is to provide targeted, skilled instruction and experiences. Our instructors are certified teachers and community volunteers who are trained and passionate about the sport they are leading. Any student who is interested in the sport may take part. There are no tryouts or need to be part of a team or program. We want to build lifelong skills and enjoyment of the chosen sport(s).They are double the time of our usual electives which creates more opportunity for more off-campus activities. You can choose one or many and only pay for the Academies you choose. At CHHS junior high students have core courses (Humanities and STEM) in the mornings. Their afternoons are electives, PE and Foundations. The academy takes the place of two of four blocks in the afternoon. Ex. If you are in basketball academy you would go to academy all afternoon on Day A. On Day B you would have Foundations and another elective of your choice. Currently academies run for one quarter and then a new one begins. We will decide on quarters vs semesters once we gather information on what families want. You don’t have to pick just one , you could sign up for up to four! We work to offset the academies from the season of play so athletes don’t get tired or bored. Fees for Academies may vary depending on the number of participants, off campus activities and guest coaches. All unused funds will be refunded. Please view the current “Student Fees” on the school website under the “Resources” tab. Academies need at least 20 registered participant to run. Deposits will be refunded if the Academy does not go forward. We anticipate the cost to be approximately $125 per quarter. This pays for use of facilities such as Big Marble Go Centre, some instruction and equipment. This structure allows us to branch into Arts or CTF academies if the demand and interest is there. We plan to branch into elementary with camps and “Try a Sport” days. As well, ‘Game Day’ themed CTF and Dual Credit opportunities are being explored for High School.
