Junior High Foundations
Career Education and Financial Literacy (7–9)
Career education and financial literacy equips students with the knowledge, understanding, and skills to explore career pathways, make informed decisions, and manage money responsibly. Through this subject, students examine a wide range of career opportunities; reflect on their interests, strengths, and goals; and begin to connect their learning to possible futures. They also develop practical financial skills by learning how spending, saving, budgeting, and planning can support their well-being and long-term goals. Together, career education and financial literacy help students build confidence by developing their critical-thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, while preparing them for successful transitions to further school, work, and life.
In grade 9, HCS3000 will be offered.
Wellness (7-9)
Well-Being
The wellness education component of this subject promotes the health of individuals and communities. It provides students with opportunities to learn about various aspects of well-being, so they can make informed decisions that benefit themselves and their communities. In wellness education, students learn about the importance of consent, mutual respect, risk management, and the responsibility to support healthy relationships and the safety of self and others. They also learn about decision making and healthy practices related to mental well-being, safety and injury prevention, growth and development, human sexuality, and healthy relationships. Wellness education supports social-emotional well-being, fosters positive mental health, and enables students to develop a better understanding of themselves and how they contribute to community well-being. As students mature, they acquire, understand, and apply health and wellness information to support well-being in a variety of contexts. Throughout the curriculum, students build and expand upon knowledge regarding safe and supportive networks that link home, school, and community life.
Healthy Eating and Food Literacy
Throughout the curriculum, students develop their ability to apply nutrition knowledge and food literacy skills to support well-being. In Grade 7 to Grade 9, learning progresses to food literacy, where students examine how food supports personal and community well-being, including the role of dietary patterns in health, the impact of local food environments, and the development of lifelong healthy relationships with food.
Human Sexuality Education
The boldfaced and italicized learning outcomes in the grades 3–9 physical education and wellness curriculum contain topics related to gender identity, sexual orientation, or human sexuality. Where classroom content includes subject matter that deals primarily and explicitly with gender identity, sexual orientation, or human sexuality, school authorities must notify parents and caregivers at least 30 calendar days in advance and provide parents and caregivers with the option to opt-in their child, rather than opt-out, for this instruction. This requirement does not apply to indirect or incidental references to these topics
