High School English


At CHHS, there are three streams of English at the high school level: English 10-1, 20-1, 30-1; English 10-2, 20-2, 30-2; and English 10-4, 20-4, 30-4.  Performance in the Grade 9 course determines the senior high course choices. 

ENGLISH 10-1 , 10-2 , 10-4 

LA9 Teachers will determine students’ placement in English 10 based on each student’s ability to meet a predetermined set of specific outcomes in Gr. 9 Language Arts. 

Students will continue to build upon the skills learned in middle school by closely studying and analyzing the elements of texts. In doing so, students will begin to have a deeper appreciation of the various forms of literature, including essay, short story, novel, poetry, and modern and Shakespearean drama. In English 10-1 students will learn to become critical and independent thinkers, while also learning how literature can broaden students’ understanding of humanity’s values, customs, and traits. Oral, visual, and written work will be utilized. Students who are placed in 10-2 will have a more prominent focus on acquiring the basic skills required for appropriate communication in writing and speaking. There will be a focus on the ability to write in a clear, correct, and well-organized form, as well as a focus on functional language skills such as punctuation and grammar. English Language Arts 10-4 focuses on foundational skills of communication to enhance confidence, build personal identity and strengthen workplace skills.  The six strands of language arts are studied with a focus on functional resources to foster and develop communication. 

ENGLISH 20-1 

Recommended Entry: 60% from English 10-1 

This course will continue to develop previously acquired knowledge and skills in both oral and written English by encouraging the student to strive for a deeper appreciation of the scope and significance of the various forms of literature - essay, short story, novel, poetry, modern and Shakespearean drama. As well, the students will increase their ability to analyze critically, think independently and evaluate intelligently while recognizing that the study of literature can broaden students’ understanding of humanity’s values, customs and traits. Oral, visual and written work will be utilized, while students will also work to strengthen their writing skills, including voice and grammar. 

ENGLISH 20-2 

This course is intended to provide students with basic skills required for appropriate communication in writing and speaking. 

Students will be instructed in language technicalities to enable them to avoid common errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. The ability to write in a clear, correct, and well organized form will be stressed. Literature and its relationship to society will be explored through the study of selected essays, short stories, novels, poems, drama, and media. 

ENGLISH 20-4 

In English Language Arts 20-4, foundational skills continue to develop while students are exposed to a variety of texts.  Comprehension strategies are advanced and both functional and creative writing are explored.  Students are able to extend their knowledge and use of language to communicate effectively and work towards their educational and career goals. 

**A 30 level English course is required to meet graduation requirements** 

ENGLISH 30-1 

Recommended Entry: 60% from English 20-1 

This course will further develop acquired knowledge and skills in both oral and written English by encouraging the student to strive for a deeper appreciation of the scope and significance of the various forms of literature - essay, short story, novel, poetry, modern and Shakespearean drama. 

As well, students will increase their ability to analyze critically, think independently and evaluate intelligently while recognizing that the study of literature can broaden their understanding of humanity’s values, customs and traits. Also oral and written work will be utilized to stress inter- relationships of the various units. Oral, visual, and written work will be utilized, while students will also work to strengthen their writing skills, including voice and grammar. This course is subject to a provincial diploma exam which determines 30% of the final mark. 

ENGLISH 30-2 

This course is designed to provide continuing practice in the basic skills of reading, writing, and speaking. As is the case in English 10-2 and English 20-2, students will be encouraged to express themselves in a clear, concise, and well-organized manner. A greater degree of sophistication will be expected of the English 30-2 student in regard to communication skills. 

Literature and its relationship to society will continue to be explored through a study of appropriate essays, short stories, novels, poetry, drama and media. This course is subject to a provincial diploma exam which determines 30% of the final mark. 

ENGLISH 30-4 

English 30-4 aims to foster and strengthen the development of language. Learning the foundational skills of communication enhances confidence, builds personal identity and enables individuals to create and sustain meaningful relationships. Becoming successful communicators at home, at school, at work and in the community enables students to experience personal satisfaction and become responsible, contributing citizens and lifelong learners. Knowledge and Employability English language arts highlights six language arts—listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and representing. Students engage all six language arts as they study texts and as they create their own texts in relevant situations for a variety of purposes and audiences.
