SOCIAL STUDIES 10-1
Students demonstrating sufficient success in Social Studies 9 will be placed in Social Studies 10-1. Students may be assessed for Social Studies 10-2 if the teacher, parent and student feel this is the best option for success.
Perspectives on Globalization
Students will explore multiple perspectives on origins of globalization and the local, national and international impacts of globalization on lands, cultures, economies, human rights and quality of life. They will examine the relationships among globalization, citizenship and identity to enhance skills for citizenship in a globalizing world. The infusion of multiple perspectives will allow students to examine the effects of globalization on peoples in Canada and throughout the world, including the impact on Aboriginal and Francophone communities.

Perspectives on Nationalism
Students will explore the complexities of nationalism in Canadian and international contexts. They will study the origins of nationalism and the influence of nationalism on regional, international and global relations. The infusion of multiple perspectives will allow students to develop understandings of nationalism and how nationalism contributes to the citizenship and identities of peoples in Canada.
SOCIAL STUDIES 20-2
Understandings of Nationalism
Students will examine historical and contemporary understandings of nationalism in Canada and the world. They will explore the origins of nationalism as well as the impacts of nationalism on individuals and communities in Canada and other locations. Examples of nationalism, ultra nationalism, supranationalism and internationalism will be examined from multiple perspectives. Students will develop personal and civic responses to emergent issues related to nationalism.
**A 30 level English course is required to meet graduation requirements**

Perspectives on Ideology
Students will explore the origins and complexities of ideologies and examine multiple perspectives regarding principles of classical and modern liberalism. An analysis of various political and economic systems will allow students to assess the viability of the principles of liberalism. Developing understandings of roles and responsibilities associated with citizenship will encourage students to respond to emergent global issues.
This course is subject to a provincial diploma exam which determines 30% of the final mark.
SOCIAL STUDIES 30-2
Understandings of Ideologies
Students will examine the origins, values and components of competing ideologies. They will explore multiple perspectives regarding relationships among individualism, liberalism, common good and collectivism. An examination of various political and economic systems will allow students to determine the viability of the values of liberalism. Developing understandings of the roles and responsibilities associated with citizenship will encourage students to respond to emergent global issues.
This course is subject to a provincial diploma exam which determines 30% of the final mark.
SOCIAL 30 FLEXIBLE LEARNING OPTION
Social Studies Flex 30 is centered around a truly flexible learning model designed to help students who can benefit from a more flexible learning environment find a path to success in their required 30 level Social Studies and their graduation requirements. Recognizing that there are many reasons that students may require more flexibility in their approach to education this course is designed to allow students to proceed through Social 30 with both the advantages of an in-person instructor who is available to help students on a one-on-one basis but also the ability to determine your own schedule in completing the course requirements.
In essence the course is offered as a hybrid learning experience where the course content would be offered in an “On Demand” learning experience where students can work through the course content at their own pace (relaxed or accelerated). Some of the features of the course include:
- Pre-Recorded lessons that can be accessed in a chronological order at student’s convenience.
- Online supplementary materials to help with understanding (readings, videos etc.)
- Daily teacher availability for one on one or small group instruction and tutoring.
- Homework will be assigned but not assessed as part of an overall mark.
- Marks will be determined by unit exams, written assignments, and unit projects.
- Reassessment opportunities will be provided if students do not meet their desired level of achievement.
- Diploma exams can be taken during 1 of 4 scheduled writing sessions to accommodate students’ readiness.
- Students who fall into any one of the following categories should consider if this delivery of Social Studies 30 is right for them.
- For students with an academically rigorous schedule this course can offer some needed flexibility to reduce the pressures of daily school.
- Students who struggle with attendance and homework completion but do not lack in the ability to understand materials are able to maintain the academic marks required for graduation.
- It allows students who want to accelerate the course to gain more prep time to do so.
- Students who are involved in demanding extra-curricular activities will not be missing class as materials are available online 24/7.
- Students who have taken the course unsuccessfully previously and need an opportunity to meet the graduation requirements can do so.
- Students who struggle with large group instruction and can benefit from more one on one assistance.
- Students with schedules due to things like work that often interfere with an ability to attend class.
