Junior High CTF Courses

Grade 7 students will  rotate through 4 CTF Courses "strands" (Construction, Fashion, Foods & Digital Engineering)

While grade 8 and 9 students will select from the strands as electives.

CONSTRUCTION

CONSTRUCTION 7 , 8
Construction is a hands-on program designed to introduce students to general woodworking practices. Students will expand their knowledge and experience through individual take-home projects. During their time here students will learn how to safely use hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machinery. Safety here is paramount, the program is designed to inspire and safely build confidence in the progressive use of more powerful woodworking tools. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have woodworking skills that will be useful in many aspects of the construction industry. Additionally, the student should have a broader understanding of the construction processes as well as have developed hands on problem solving skills. There is no written evaluation component.

CONSTRUCTION 9
This course is geared toward students who have a keen interest in the woodworking profession. Construction techniques will focus on advancing the skills learned in Construction 7 and 8; to prepare, layout, cut, fasten and finish construction materials. The goal is to build a useful and aesthetically pleasing project that can be enjoyed for years to come. Safe use of more advanced processes and machines will be taught. This is all done in a collaborative atmosphere where students may work together to complete their task. This is a project based program whereby careful demonstration of learned techniques and employability skills are the predominant evaluation.

*This course has an additional fee. Please refer to our school website for the current “School Fees” found under the “Resources” tab.

COSMETOLOGY GRADE 9 ONLY

GRADE 9 ONLY
Students will explore foundational skills in cosmetology. The class will focus on safety and sanitation in the lab, basics of hair, hair design, proper use of various hair tools, proper nail care and nail art and exploring the application of makeup. Skincare may be discussed throughout the quarter depending on time. All the above skills will prepare students for the advanced cosmetology classes available in high school.
*This course has an additional fee. Please refer to our school website for the current “School Fees” found under the “Resources” tab.

DIGITAL ENGINEERING

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL ENGINEERING 7
In this course you will be learning about three major topics including: Robotics, 3D Printing, and Computer Programming. Students will learn how to code a robot to get through specific challenges, design and print a functional item using one of our 3D printers, and create their own computer game. Students will become skilled in using software such as Tinkercad, Scratch, and Lego Mindstorms.

DIGITAL ENGINEERING 8 , 9
In this course, students will continue explore three key areas of digital engineering: Robotics, Coding, and 3D Printing/Design. Participants will gain hands-on experience by programming robots to navigate complex obstacles and challenges using robots, designing functional objects with our advanced 3D printers, and
continuing to learn new types and styles of code including creating games and apps. Key software tools include Tinkercad for 3D modeling, Code.org for introductory programming, and the versatile Lego Mindstorms and Spheros for the robotics environment. By the end of the course, students will have developed a robust set of skills in various aspects of computer science and design engineering technologies. When taking this course it is important to note that Grade 8 and 9 students are now allowed to narrow their focus and do not have to complete all 3 strands offered each quarter; rather they can focus on 1 or 2 key areas that they find interesting.
*This course has an additional fee. Please refer to our school website for the current “School Fees” found under the“Resources” tab.

FASHION

FASHION STUDIES 7
Students cover the following areas: sewing equipment, machine operation, basic hand and machine sewing techniques. Management skills and the unique creative potential of the individual are stressed. About 75% of the class time is spent on practical work. Grade 7 students do three projects which include both machine
and hand sewing. The popular projects include a pin cushion, a stuffed frog and PJ shorts.

FASHION STUDIES 8
Students cover the same areas as in Grade 7 but in increasing detail as skills develop. Students will have the opportunity to make a hooded sweatshirt and a drawstring backpack! Management skills and the unique creative potential of the individual are stressed.

FASHION STUDIES 9
Students will improve their sewing techniques and will also learn how to determine pattern size, choose suitable pattern and fabric, make pattern alterations and prepare fabric and pattern for layout. Clothing care, textiles, and clothing selection are also studied during this course. Students will be choosing two projects to sew [a list of suggested projects will be given]. Costs will vary according to the project chosen.
*This course has an additional fee. Please refer to our school website for the current “School Fees” found under the “Resources” tab.

FOODS 7-9

Students will learn how to manage resources and follow basic kitchen routines. Topics studied include safety and hygiene, metric measurement, equipment use and care, and Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating. In the lab, students will apply the knowledge learned as they prepare a variety of breakfast, lunch and supper recipes.

DIGITAL ARTS AND MEDIA

DIGITAL ARTS & MEDIA 7 (used to be Multimedia)

**This course is not part of the CTF rotation for Gr. 7** Students will use dual screen computers with a variety of apps to create cool digital projects. Student projects include: creating an original design and printing it onto a t-shirt, learning basic photo techniques, taking photographs and editing and creating a digital animation. Student work may be showcased in the classroom, school, web the yearbook or the Digital Arts display at the Esplanade!

DIGITAL ARTS & MEDIA 8 (used to be Multimedia)
This is a course where creativity meets technology. Students will continue their learning in animation, photography, design and video. Student work may be showcased in the classroom, school, web, the yearbook or the Digital Arts display at the Esplanade!

DIGITAL ARTS & MEDIA 9 (used to be Multimedia)
This is a project based course where students use a variety of technology and media resources to communicate, solve problems and develop skills and knowledge. Project work will help build knowledge and skills that will be helpful in Digital Arts & Media in high school. Projects challenges may include: Animation (Morphing), Design and Printing, Photography and Editing, Digital Effects and Video Production. Student work may be showcased in the classroom, school, web, the yearbook or the Digital Arts display at the Esplanade!

MECHANICS

MECHANICS 8
This class is designed to give the student a basic introduction into small engine mechanics. The course will consist of tool fundamentals, applied measurement skills, engine theory, and safety when working with small internal combustion engines like those found on lawn & garden equipment. While there will be the
opportunity for some direct work with small engines, the emphasis will be mostly on mechanical theory as the hands-on tasks are explored in our Grade 9 Small Engines mechanics course extensively.

MECHANICS 9
This class is designed to give the student a “hands on” experience in small engine mechanics and maintenance. The student will disassemble, clean, inspect and reassemble a single-cylinder four-cycle gasoline engine. The student will then start, run, and fine-tune the engine for maximum performance. The student will also be made aware of the tools and shop practices in a small engine repair shop. Safety, of course, will be our top priority.
