Through an examination of events preceding and following Confederation, students will develop an understanding of how Canada has evolved into a multicultural, bilingual, pluralistic and diverse society. This study, combined with a study of current affairs, will be done within the context of developing skills, values, and attitudes which will help students grow to become responsible, contributing citizens. Students will begin to learn how these dimensions of Canada have affected our citizenship and identity over time. In turn this study will allow students to develop values, skills, and attitudes which will help students grow to become responsible, contributing citizens.

SOCIAL STUDIES 8

The focus of Grade 8 Social Studies is the examination of contact between societies with differing
worldviews. Grade 8 expands on the concept of intercultural contact and continues to develop geographic and historical thinking skills through an examination of past societies in different parts of the world. Students will examine the world views of different cultures in order to see how these views were expressed by people living in different times and in different places. This study, combined with a study of
current affairs, will be done within the context of developing skills, values, and attitudes which will help students grow to become responsible, contributing citizens. Through this inquiry, students will reflect on their own worldview and assess the influence that the past has had on the present. The cultures that will
be studied during Grade 8 Social Studies will include Japan, Renaissance Europe, and the Spanish and Aztec societies of the 15th and 16th centuries.

SOCIAL STUDIES 9

Students will analyze the relationship between Canada’s political and legislative processes and their impact on issues related to governance, rights, citizenship and identity. Students will also explore issues of economics and their impact on quality of life, citizenship and identity. Through this study, students will broaden their understanding and appreciation of the relationships among governance, economics, quality of life, citizenship and identity in Canada and in comparison to the United States. Grade nine offers an emphasis on the skills and processes of Social Studies through current events and cross-curricular opportunities.
