The first year of Prairie Sky Collegiate’s Introduction to Trades program wrapped up with a meaningful showcase of student learning, growth, and discovery. Students from Medicine Hat cohorts shared reflections on a year that challenged them, built new skills, and opened doors to future opportunities.

A strong theme across the presentations was the value of exploration. Students spoke about trying a wide range of trades including welder, carpenter, plumber, pipefitter, electrician, wind turbine technician, automotive service technician, heavy equipment technician, agricultural heavy equipment technician, parts technician, cook and baker. Many described how these experiences helped them better understand their interests. As one student shared, “I really liked being able to dip my toes into so many trades because it helped me figure out what I want to do and especially, what I don’t want to do.”

Hands-on learning was at the heart of the program. Students highlighted the experience of working with real tools, building practical skills, and applying their knowledge in authentic lab settings. “We weren’t just learning about it; we were actually doing it,” one student explained. “Working with our hands made a huge difference, it made everything stick.”

Some students were pushed outside of their comfort zones. Early mornings, unfamiliar equipment, overcoming fears, and balancing coursework alongside reflections and labs were common challenges. Through these experiences, students developed stronger time management habits, confidence, and persistence.

As one student reflected, “At first it was intimidating, but I developed a stronger work ethic by pushing through difficult tasks and not giving up; now I feel way more confident trying new things.”

Relationships also played an important role. Students spoke about building friendships, learning to work as a team, and feeling supported by instructors who created unique learning spaces that made them want to be their best selves.

By the end of the year, students gained more than technical skills.
They developed confidence, clarity, and a stronger sense of direction. As one student summed it up simply, “This program helped me see a future for myself.”
